Formation of Learning

Over the last forty years we have seen many students go through our little school. We have tried to keep in contact with them and on this page are some of their stories. To more accurately reflect the time period during which they attended we have added a small description of the school at the time drawn from the archives. Remember that throughout our forty year history the two core beliefs which have remained the same are:

  • Educating for the individual's needs and interest
  • Democracy and equality for all

1960's - Early 1970's

The first versions of BIS had some clear classroom structure and timetabling. Students were able to follow their interests within a basic skills structure. The school excelled in the Sciences.

Mid 1970's - 1980's

A large staff and student population saw less structure but more opportunities as adults offered to teach classes and support learning. Staff were able to teach focused subject areas. The school excelled in the Arts.

1990's

Much less parent involvement on a daily basis impacted on opportunities for adult interaction but the classrooms become very unstructured, with students able to spend much of their schooling following their own interests. Basic skill learning was not as prevalent but exciting individual projects abounded. The school excelled in Community activities and social action.

2000's

With two working parents, very few adults became available to help at the school so the structure of the school had to change to ensure that students could still follow interests whilst learning core skills. Self direction was combined with self responsibility as a Values Charter was established. The school excels in Values Education and Self Directed Learning.
